  1. Congrats on your first NOVA Open. I hope it all went well, and I hope you'll be doing it again next year!

  2. Wow so many SW armies at the top. I have to give some kudos to Dashofpepper for placing so highly with his Orks. Any thoughts on why so many of the top armies were SW?

  3. @BBF

Hmm, because there is literally zero reason apart from Vulkan to ever take Vanilla marines over anything else? Thats my guess. Too bad one of the "newer" codices, Tyranids, didn't crack the top eight.

  4. Space Marine Bikers Matt...

Something I woulda taken to this had I gone.

  5. Vanilla Marines have had a dismal showing except for Vulkan Marines and on a few occasions biker Marines. I was wondering if terrain and the objectives helped Space Wolves in general over other armies. Certainly it's common for SW to field up to four large units of Grey Hunters at 2k points. I would have thought IG would have had a better showing so I'm thinking there was lots of terrains blocking LOS. At BoLScon there was a better distribution of various armies I'm the top ten. I think it's only a matter of time until Blood Angels win a major event. They are powerful and still a bit untested up to now. Well it's good to see that IG did not dominate the event but then we now have those furry puppies whoring all the attention. I feel certain there must be a reason why the Space Puppies did so well overall.

  7. As far as Nids go, I specifically asked in the chat about them and what I got was basically that none of the lists were really any good (not enough Hive Guard, lots of Deathstars going around) and that they all had rather bad records. Disappointing for sure, I really wanted to see if they could do well.

As far as why Space Wolves did so well, I would stack it up to really good players playing them really well with really good lists lol. Out of all the games/boards I witnessed, none of them seemed out of balance in regards to different armies, meaning that a reason that IG usually does do so well is not enough LOS blocking terrain at events. This is actually a blessing in disguise as it knocks the proverbial "cheese" IG down a few notches.

Overall, the tournament and chat was excellent, and I believe you really should look into getting some good commentators lined up to talk about the board, armies, the players, what their armies and units do etc throughout games to keep things interesting. BOOM! lol.

  8. Aye, if I can make it next year, I probably will be willing to talk about players/observations a bit more than most.

  9. After all, I was identifying and doing all that for the uStream feed's chatroom ANYWAY. lol

  10. Any chance of getting the top 8 armylists?

  11. I'd love to see the BA list that came in 2nd place.

  12. I believe the ba list was

    mephiston
    libby
    4x (5x ASM, meltagun, IP, powerweapon,Rhino)
    2x bare Baal Pred
    3x Autolas-pred

  13. true, but I remember something like this from the chat window..

After reviewing the footage, I count 10 vehicles, difficult to see what there are though.

  14. I played against Ferek day 1 of the tournament, he was my only loss (I went 3-1, but didn't win by enough margin on my wins to make the final round. I was playing codex marines instead of switching to blood angels, and as Ferek is the only one who beat me, and I beat mech guard and KFF orks, I think I did pretty well).

Fereks list, because I still have a copy of it, was -

    Mephiston
    Libby

Honor guard in rhino (2x flamer 2x melta)
Honor guard in rhino (2x flamer 2x melta)

5 man assault squad in rhino (w/ melta, infernus, and powersword)
5 man assault squad in rhino (w/ melta, infernus, and powersword)
5 man assault squad in rhino (w/ melta, infernus, and powersword)
5 man assault squad in rhino (w/ melta, infernus, and powersword)

    Baal pred (TLAC)
    Ball pred (TLAC)

    Auto/las pred
    Auto/las pred
    Auto/las pred

The fact that I didn't realize there was no such thing as impassable terrain didn't help me, I didn't realize he could drive through the 2 rhino tall gas tanks :( I should have paid more attention during the rules briefing, but this is such a departure from my normal group's rules that I just didn't realize the implications.

  15. There were honor guard squads I believe. I seem to remember a flame template at some point.

Definitely more than just 4 rhinos. I feel like 6 maybe. Mephiston was hiding behind one for a while, almost as if the guys inside told him to get out and walk.

  16. you gonna post everyone's standings? Curious to see where I stood at 2-2.

  17. Fun Fact of the day: Mike trains dolphins to play 40k. :p

    ReplyDelete
  18. Or do the dolphins train Mike? Noodle that one for a while.

  20. As the sponsor coordinator for the NOVA Open I just want to give a shout out to our biggest sponsors--the people who attended and played for all they were worth at our tournament. It was my pleasure and honor to meet and interract with you, and I'm glad to hear that so many of you had a great time. I know I did, and think I can speak for the crew in saying that we had an awesome weekend doing our best to to make you feel at home.

(Raises a shot of good whiskey) Here's to you, our players!

    Joe

  21. @honersstodnt: Can you confirm Ferek's list again? The list you gave is like 2067 points.

Maybe there weren't Lascannon on all of the Predators?

    ReplyDelete
  22. 2067 because Armybuilder adds a boddy when you add the melta gunner. List actually comes in 1995 when you adjust the squads back down.

    ReplyDelete
  23. yeah the list is right.
    mephy
    libby
    2x honor guard(2x flamer, 2x melta, rhino)
4x assault squads (infernus, power weapon, melta, rhino, searchlights)
    2x baal
3x predator (lascannon sponsons, autocannon turret)
comes out to 1999 w/ searchlights on ASM rhinos

  24. Of the SW armies, how many had ThunderWolf Cav units?

    ReplyDelete
  25. thunderwolf calv wasn't that popular however there were a lot of thunderwolf lords from walking around.

don't trust armybuilder. I once got charged for veteran sergeants in all my squads a few years ago when a TO put my list into army builder and said I was 60pts over. Trust paper and pencil/excel

    ReplyDelete
  26. One worthwhile comment about armybuilder...make sure to proofread it! We had one player that didn't notice armybuilder had put all his eligible vehicles in squadrons, even in a case where there was only one of a vehicle. The player had plenty of slots and no need to squad up, but his opponent saw it on the list and called him on it.

    ReplyDelete
  27. @David: I wasn't using Army Builder, I was adding things up in my head. I misremembered the price of the auto/plas predator.

But in general, Army Builder is a lot more accurate than pencil and paper. Jeeze, who uses pencil and paper anymore?

The AB40K community has done an amazing job with that product and deserves some mad props!

@kazzual: You can't blame Army Builder for that one, lol. The only way for it to create a squadron is if you tell it to (duplicating the unit is pretty darn easy).

    ReplyDelete
  28. I got no knock on army builder, though I don't personally use it anymore.

The army builder guys never replied to our inquiry about sponsorship / partnership / etc.

  29. @kazzual: checked afterwards -- it was apparently a brain-fart on my part. I WILL proofread more thoroughly in the future.
