BFS List + Caveat; Updated w/ Test Photo

So, here's the list I'll bring to Battle for Salvation, if I can get it built and painted to an acceptable standard in time to actually play.

If anyone is feeling charitable and wants to paint a giant Tyranid army to a professional standard in 2 weeks you can feel free to let me know (wink wink kid kid).

The Swarmlord - 280
Tyrant Guard x 1 - 60

Parasite of Mortrex - 160

2 x Zoanthropes - 120

Tervigon w/ Furious Charge, Poison, 3 Powers - 210

10 x Termagants - 50

30 x Gargoyles - 180
30 x Gargoyles - 180

Dropped furious off the gargs, b/c if they need it, they can get it from Swarmlord.
Tyrant Guard + likely Iron Arm makes Swarmlord ridicudurable, to the point that it's either an auto-win if someone tries to focus fire him on turns 1-2, or he gets there, and that's pretty good for me too. I should clarify, Iron Arm + Endurance from someone + Telekine Dome from someone (I'll get at least one of each in almost any game unless extremely unlikely, if you roll up the math on 19 powers) makes for ridicudurable. Iron Arm alone doesn't cut it so well.

Army largely ignores flyers, which aren't going to have meaningful time on target due to board crossing, and which can't late drop on objectives, b/c they'll be swarmed by model count.

edit - 25 Powers
Here's a mock-up testbed for the paint scheme ... Hive Fleet Dendrobates

  1. Don't you have a total of 25 powers since each Zoanthrope should get 2 rolls?

  2. I really hope you get this army finished in time for BFS- I'd love to see some bat-reps. Good luck!

  3. Sheesh, that list lots like tons of modelling work...my head hurts just thinking about the effort involved in that. It's the 60 gargoyles and the 30 gaunts...

So is the new meta hordes? 40k goes from parking lots to Obama's inaugaration in one fell swoop...

    1. The meta isn't necessarily hordes, but I sure have always loved hordes, and the meta is a little better suited to them now.

I always look back and kinda marvel that as a general rule, every army I've ever fully built and painted (never quite with this intent at all) has been lots of regular dudes to get the job done, with a fancy toy or two tacked on or buffing them. My original Necrons (early 4e), Nids (4e/5e), Strakenguard (5e), and now Nids again all fit into this general approach ... just never by my attempting to consciously.

    2. Well, enjoy 6th! Seems to be suited to your style.

  4. Great camouflage by the way! I didn't notice the wing until I read the comments and there was nothing snarky in them. Like the scheme. Since you need speed, I recommend using an airbrush for 99% of the work. You can then do tongues, claws and eyes separately. The grex I recently bought (at NOVA none the less) would chew through that scheme in no time. I suspect you know people who can hook you up. If you don't you are welcome to borrow mine.

    1. I would also need help learning the best way to use it to get the desired effect. Have some free time? :p

    2. Mike, I will be running a painting class at Austin's in October. Would you like to join us? I am doing a portion on airbrushing miniatures...Drath, you're local right? Would you like to be involved?

    3. I might be interested in that, Tim - it depends on the time. I have to get around to pulling my badger out of storage, also ... and/or acquire a Grex, which is my preferred course of action.

It won't do me any good prepping for BFS though :p

  5. Tim: I am local(capital hill) and would be happy to be involved.
Mike: I am free saturday if you want to churn through some of those nids.

  6. Jackson Pollack would be proud. Call the wax paper "Brandt #1" and frame it :)

The wing? Well...thin your paints better if you are going to try blending. Tighten up your brush strokes. Shadows lines would be nice. I assume your base coat is some value of light blue? Swap out that red for something like raw siena, slightly darkened to contrast with the light blue. Your colors are too close in saturation, and look "meh" as a result. You need more contrast. Bear in mind that gray next to color will take on a potentially undesirable appearance. (gray next to red can end up looking greenish for example.) You may want to correct for that. You may want to add an accent color, say a red-violet of some sort.

Use the Badger. It'll work fine for the basecoating, and first highlight on 'nids. It is the only way you'll get things done in time. Avoid using the power sprayer that was used for the terrain. Save that for painting the fence ;)

Whatever you do, please no Leadbelcher Steel and Xereus Purple. You'll see enough of that at BFS.

    ¡Suerte!

  7. I've been playing something like this for a bit, never thought about adding Swarmy, so thanks for posting the list, progress on painting looks great. I am certainly going to try it in my local this weekend.

  8. So again let's be charitable and say that Buy WOW Items we're talking about a max delta of something like 5-10% between someone WOW Gold for Sale who scales awesome and someone who scales poorly at the very end of a raid tier when everyone is completely WOW Items geared, which by the way,
